Sports massage should play an important part in the life of any sportsman or woman whether they are injured or not. Massage has a number of benefits both physical, physiological and psychological.

Massage can :

Maintain the body generally in better condition.

Prevent injuries and loss of mobility.

Cure and restore mobility to injured muscle tissue.

Boost performance.

Extend the overall life of your sporting career.

Physical effects of massage are:

Pumping – The stroking movements in massage suck fluid through blood vessels and lymph vessels. By increasing the pressure in front of the stroke, a vacuum is created behind. This is especially important in tight or damaged muscle tissue as a tight muscle will squeeze blood out like a sponge, depriving the tissues of vital nutrients and energy to repair.

Increased tissue permeability – Deep massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, enabling fluids and nutrients to pass through. This helps remove waste products such as lactic acid and encourage the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients which help them recover quicker.

Stretching – Massage can stretch tissues that could not be stretched in the usual methods. Bundles of muscle fibres are stretched lengthwise as well as sideways. Massage can also stretch the sheath or fascia that surrounds the muscle, so releasing any tension or pressure build up.

Break down scar tissue – Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries or trauma and can effect muscle, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.

Improve tissue elasticity – Hard training can make tissues hard and inelastic. This is one reason why hard training may not result in improvements. Massage helps reverse this by stretching the tissues.

Opens micro-circulation – Massage does increase blood flow to tissues, but so does exercise. What massage also does is open or dilate the blood vessels and by stretching them this enables nutrients to pass through more easily.

Physiological effects of sports massage are:

Pain reduction – Tension and waste products in muscles can often cause pain. Massage helps reduce this in many ways including releasing the bodies endorphins.

Relaxation – Muscles relax through heat generated, circulation and stretching. Mechanoreceptors which sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth are stimulated causing a reflex relaxation.

Psychological effects of massage are:

Anxiety reduction – through the effects mentioned above relaxation is induced and so reduces anxiety levels.

Invigorating – if massage is done with brisk movements such as what would be done before an event then this can produces an invigorating feeling.

In this massage treatment, the healing stone ritual incorporates Aromatherapy and tension releasing effleurage, starting with warm sculpted river stones used as an extension of the therapists’ hands to bring you deep relaxation, grounding and perfect balance from head to toe. Cool stones alternately re-energise and stimulate muscles.

The deep penetrating heat of the volcanic basalt stone is combined with traditional massage and aromatherapy techniques to release muscular tension. Enveloped in warmth, you can achieve a deeper dimension of relaxation, to harmonize your energy and invoke a meditative state.

Basalt and Marble Stones produce sedative and re-energizing responses to the body as we incorporate both energies of black and white, hot and cold in the treatment. This wonderful massage creates a feeling of well being, a sense of wholeness, that one might not have felt for sometime.

What happens during a session

Stones are placed under the body, on the body and are used to massage you, warmth reaches deep into your muscles, melting tension and stress. A stone under each hand opens your hands, the warmth melting up your arm. A comforting stone on the belly, feels like a hot water bottle, the lightness experienced when the stone is removed needs to be experienced to be believed. Chilled stones are used on areas of inflammation. Cool half moon stones are placed under your eyes. Warm rocks and hands warmed by the rocks massage away tension. Stone therapy is a holistic treatment, working on mind, body and soul (spirit).

Each rock used has been individually chosen to be used in a LaStone Therapy treatment.

Massage is the kneading and stroking of the body’s soft tissues – the skin and muscles – with varying degrees of pressure, and is incorporated in a number of traditional health systems such as Practitioners of modern complementary therapies like aromatherapy and reflexology use various massage techniques

What does it do? Gentle massage affects the nervous system through nerve endings in the skin, stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s natural ‘feel good’ chemicals, to help induce relaxation and a sense of well-being, to and reduce levels of stress chemicals such as cortisol and noradrenaline. It helps reverse the damaging effects of stress by slowing heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure.

Stronger massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and helps the lymphatic system to flush away waste products. It eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility.

The most common massage techniques include:

effleurage, a light, firm and gentle stroking

petrissage, firm kneading and rolling of the tissues

friction, deep direct pressure to release muscle tension

Hacking, tapping and clapping over the muscles and fleshy parts of the body

When was the last time you treated yourself to a facial? A facial is a great way to treat your skin. Getting facials will help you achieve a clear complexion and a nice glow.

A facial can offer many benefits. The face is always subject to the elements such as the sun, fumes, air conditioning and maybe smoke or an improper at home regime. Facials offer you the opportunity to work with a professional skin care specialist who will analyze your skin, help you improve your complexion and show you how to take proper care of your skin.

A facial can give you a deep cleansing, deeper than the cleansing you will get at home. A facial includes cleansing as well as exfoliation which can help to unclog your pores. Extracting open comedones will also help rid the skin of acne. Your skin care specialist will help soften the skin with steam, hot moist towels, and enzymes or other exfoliants.

A skin care specialist or esthetician will choose the ingredients to help your skin type. The esthetician may choose a mask to detoxify your skin or hydrate your skin. By getting a proper analysis you will not only learn your skin type, but an esthetician will be able to create a facial experience that addresses your skin’s needs.

A facial helps increase circulation and stimulates the skin. It can also help slow down premature aging by custom-targeting your skin care. Facials are a great preventative treatment to help you beat wrinkles before they occur. Keeping your skin hydrated will help keep the skin moist and stop dehydration.

A facial may help you understand the proper skin care products for your skin. Most people are using the wrong products for their skin type; this causes the skin to become sensitized. A good esthetician will work with you to create a home care regime that will be both easy to use and work with your individual skin type. Skin type is determined by pore size, tone, and texture. It is also determined by oil production, called sebum.

Look at our facial products, come into our salon for a skin test, if you would like to purchase our products you can either order them via the internet or purchase them directly from the salon.
